Topper and Laser Radial News August 2019
As usual the Topper sailing year was marked with the fantastic Junior Fortnight. This was also the second year of the inclusion of Laser Radials.
Unlike some other years we had a decent amount of wind for the competition - sometimes too much! This didn’t deter our brave competitors and some good competitions ensued.
Toppers AM was won by Monty Heath, closely followed by Ben Rogers. Henry Palmer fought well for third place. Laura Hantrais won Toppers PM. Iona Slatter and Ed Timberlake fought a close second and third place respectively.
The Laser Radial competition was fiercely fought with James Taylor in first place, Jamie Chilver-Stainer second and Dominic Gogarty in third place. Jamie cleaned up on the Laser Radial Super Cup event - winning all four races on the day with James Taylor in second place and William Neal in third.
Although the Youth Single-Hander Class is most active during Junior Fortnight week, it doesn’t diminish the fact that these sailors put in a terrific amount of effort in the JF competition - and have a lot of fun doing so. Very well done. It is encouraging to see continued enthusiasm for the Laser Radial Class - the natural progression for Topper Sailors.
On an administrative note, after 3 years, I am stepping down as Class Captain. I am delighted that Milly Bullock has kindly volunteered to take on the role and bag of spare Topper bungs (as she is handing over Mirrors). Many of you know Milly - she will do a fine job. It has been a pleasure helping the young sailors and I will continue to share a glass of Veltins with you parents any time!
