It was ladies first for the 5 Itchenor boats at the 420 nationals in Pwllheli last week. The week had everything from downpour to sun, light and shifty to very windy with big seas, and parties every night. The series was supposed to be 14 races but the third race on Tuesday was the crews’ race and didn’t count for points. The fleet was sent ashore rapidly on Thursday after just two races as nearby Abersoch reeled from a 40 knot squall. The sailors then voted with their cold and tired feet against going out again at 4.30 for another race. And on the last day the race officer managed to squeeze in 2 races and a medal race before the wind died away. For once the packup was in warm sunshine!
Izzy FitzGerald & Kat Colvin were 10th overall – putting them in the medal race. This had been requested by the sailors at the class’ AGM and although didn’t count for the overall series was greatly enjoyed by the participants. Charlotte FitzGerald & Emma Spruce were 12th overall, making the sisters 2nd and 3rd ladies.
Hugo Sloper sailing with Hugo Jones-Warner for the first time was 24th, Ollie Smyth sailing with Harry Yeoward was 29th and Archie Law & Harry Gilchrist taking part in their first nationals and sailing in big waves for the first time, were 37th. Well done everyone. |

Delighted you are interested in 420s!
We’re so lucky at Itchenor – we have lots of 420s, some excellent sailors to help us and a great clubhouse and sailing water.
Let’s really use it this whole year. The great thing about winter training and sailing should be the parties afterwards……(Tara and Lisa over to you).

Interested in sailing a 420? There are a couple of interesting background info sheets from the 420 Class Association that you may want to read.
Click here to download "So you've decided to become a 420 sailor"
and here to download "Considering a 420"
both are good background stuff. |
