  26 Jan 2012 PROGRAMME

You should have received the 2012 Programme which Linda sent out earlier.

The 2012 Mirror programme aims to have a complimentary mix of training, fun events and racing. Recognising that families and children have many commitments during term time, I have targeted certain weekends as "Mirror Weekends" hoping that we can have really good turnouts on those weekends. For those newer to mirror sailing, we have 4 Saturdays of mirror training programmed followed by racing on Sunday. I am really keen for you to get your Mums, Dads, grandparents, brothers, sisters etc to race with you on Sundays and we have some new trophies this year that can only be won by adult and child teams. For the more experienced sailors, we have race training planned together with lots of club racing – both Club line starts and mini-regattas.

I will send out further explanation of items in the programme, but in the meantime, do look at the programme and put those "Mirror weekends" in your diaries.

Mirror Training Weeks: the following is the current status and will be posted on the website:

The course is aimed at beginners and intermediates aged 8 to 12 years old to develop a range of sailing skills and background knowledge, to improve confidence and to have lots of fun.

It is run by RYA certified instructors and a team of experienced teenagers, all of whom are Itchenor Sailing Club members. The younger instructors are available to sail with less experienced boats if and when necessary and on days when wind conditions are stronger.

All children attending the course must be ISC members. Helms must be confident sailing upwind, tacking and have basic wind awareness. Crews may be complete beginners although children should have some experience of sailing. Beginner crews will be allocated to suitable helms. All children must be confident swimmers.

This year the club is running 4 training sessions and lots of racing before the Mirror Training week. Beginners and less experienced helms and crews are advised to join these sessions to gain experience and confidence which will enhance their experience during the training week

Members will have a choice of attending either week 1 or week 2 of the Training Week. Places are on a first come basis, there will be a maximum of 20 boats per week. Application forms will be available to download from Monday the 19th March. Printed copies will also be sent in the Spring Mailing.

Any queries re Mirror Training Weeks should be referred to Louise in the office.

Regards
Amanda

16 Jan Happy New Year to you all.
We have been busy finalising the Mirror Class and ISC mirror programme for 2012 and updating details for publication of the handbook. I am hoping that the programme will be available this week so that you can all start planning your summer diaries. In the meantime:

1. Our ISC mirror class website has details of the UK Mirror Class Association events for 2012, including our own ISC Open meeting on 6th and 7th May and Open Meetings at Bosham and CYC. To enter these events, you will need to be a member of the Mirror Class Association, join at: www.ukmirrorsailing.com.

2. Five ISC mirrors participated in the CYC Snowflake on 8th January 2012 and had a great time. See the ISC website for a report. The next events are on 22nd January and 12th February if anyone else would like to join in.

3. The South zone and National Squad boats have been busy training: Join the Mirror Class Association facebook page to keep abreast of mirror activity happening all over the country, including much involving ISC mirrors.

4. Working parties: thank you to Piers Wilson, Rob Sutherland, Mike Rummell, and Mark Candlish for their hardwork at the working party in December. It was extremely physical work but I have to say, the day was a lot of fun and lunch was good! More volunteers are needed to finish the staging before the start of the season. Can anyone help on 3rd March or 17/18 March?

I will let you all know as soon as the programme is available.

Amanda

12 Jan Itchenor Mirrors doing well at Chichester Yacht Club Snowflake
Successful day for ISC in opening race of Snowflake series at CYC. Three ISC mirrors in the top 5 of the 23 boat slow handicap fleet. Congratulations to Grace Yeoman and Izzy Barker for their second overall. Imy Pudney also did a great job coming in third despite her tactician, Jonathan Pudney, positioning them over the line on the start. Harriet Fisk tried valiantly to wake her helmsman father up with a sharp jab to the head with the spinnaker pole after he squandered a text book start and leading position round the windward mark – the technique worked and they clung on to 5th place. Youngsters Annabel Fisk and Milly Moss also had a good race and would have been well up the fleet but for a small navigational error.

Next race of series is Sunday 22nd Jan. Would be great to get a few more ISC Mirrors down – some good racing and plenty of banter over an excellent lunch afterwards.

5 Nov Missing road trailer for Mirror Rush
The road trailer for Rush went missing in August. Does anybody have any idea of its whereabouts? If you do, please contact George Miller: george.miller@bt.com

4 Nov First of all, a big thank you to all those boats that turned out for the Bond Prize which we raced on 22/23 October.  We had 15 boats on Saturday and 8 on Sunday and had some really exciting racing in windy conditions.  The event was won by Clare Peterson and Laura Partridge.

Going forwards, there are a number of sailing options:

1.       5th/6th November, Firecracker Open at ISC.  Laura and Emily Partridge are keen to crew at this event if anyone needs a crew.  Isabel and Katie Davies would also like to sail but don't have their boats available.

2.       The Mirror Class Association is planning to run a two day coaching session at Poole on 3rd/4th December 2011. This session is open to all.  The cost of the two days will be about £40 and will last from 1000 to 1600.  If you would like to attend, please apply by e-mail to Peter Robinson, UK Mirror Class Association Secretary: lulhamrobinson@yahoo.co.uk.  The mirror national squad will also be training at Poole this weekend.

3.       Rob Bellfield (Mirror Class South area co-ordinator) is putting together some Mirror coaching at Warsash over the winter.  The dates are Sundays: 27 Nov, 12 Feb and 26 Feb - planned to coincide with the Warsash Sunday Winter Series and HW.   Timings will be: ready to go at 1000 - finishing at approx 1400.  The plan is to have a coaching session, and then if appropriate join in with the Winter Series race, with de-brief o/c.  If you would like to take part in this Sunday training at Warsash, you can either contact Rob directly: robert@bellfield.com or via me: amanda.heath.101@gmail.com and I will try and put helms/crews together.

We are just finalising key dates for next season which I will send out shortly, I will also be updating our list of boats for the Handbook, so this is not the last of me for the winter!

17 Oct ISC boat wins CYC Mirror open for only the third time in 40 years

Eight ISC boats went down the reach for the final Mirror event of the season. The CYC Mirror open is one of the oldest opens in the Mirror calendar and is celebrating its 40 year this year.
Only two other ISC boats have won the open during this 40 year period. Isabel Davies and Johnnie Law put on a series of two wins and two seconds to clinch the coveted prize. All this whilst the fleet was watched from the spacious ground of CYC whilst drinking cool larger under the willow tree.
By winning CYC and with Jo and Becky Kalderon winning Bosham earlier in the year ISC juniors still continue to dominate the Mirror racing in the harbour. Next year we need to add the Itchenor open if we truly want the triple Crown.

8 Oct THE FINAL MIRROR NATIONALS SELECTOR

For many of the Itchenor boats it was the first time in many years that they had been north of Watford. By van, by car and by train the Itchenor team arrived at the most idyllic spot in Ulswater in the lake district for the final qualifier event for the national squad. At 1 o clock the breeze came in to blow a steady 15 knotts. Katie Davies and Gemma Keers continued their recent form leading the first race all the way round but just being piped at the line. After two more races team Itchenor finished with a 4th K Davies /Keers, 9th I Davies/ Moss, 11th Mcparland E Barker, 14th Peterson/ Upton, 17th Kalderon/ Spruit and 22nd Yeoman/ I Barker. It was then a mad rush on Saturday evening to pack up boats and drive across the pass to the Royal Windermere for more racing on Sunday. At 1pm the race officer decided there was sufficient wind to run a couple of races – the second with the wind dropping to almost nothing. However off the back of it K Davies / Keers finished 9th,I Davies/Moss 11th, Mcparland/E Barker 14th,Yeoman/ I Barker 18th, Kalderon/ Spruit 19th and Peterson/Upton 23rd.

So that was the final event after three weeks of hard travel – 11 Itchenor boats participated in these high profile events and all competitors have carried our Itchenor flag with pride. Our junior members have been great travelling ambassadors for our club and positioning our club for the nationals next year. The competitors will find out on Friday who has made it to the national squad and who will make it to the south zones. However, no matter what the result, our junior class is clearly in great shape. Well done to all those who participated in these events.

29 Sept POOLE GETS TOPPED AT WEYMOUTH

Eight Itchenor boats went down to Weymouth for the South Zone championship. The teams are now used to driving down the A35 listening to those seventies and eighties sounds on "Wave" on the crackly old FM station. There were over 300 competitors racing all the RYA junior boats including fevers, cadets and optimists. The first day saw lights breezes but with the cadets starting five minutes in front of the Mirrors there was some great fleet racing as the Mirror fleet overtook them. After the first day of racing the Poole boats were lying first and third with ISC boats second and fourth. Team Itchenor then decamped to the Crab Shack at Weymouth. The group of some 50 people split up into two - a civilianized table inside the restaurant drinking decent Chablis and a dads and kids table outside for Spicey crab and beer. The next day's racing was with more breeze and Jo Kalderon and Otalie Spruite have some close racing with Isabel Davies and Millie Moss and the Watkins girls from Poole. In the last two races the ISC boats managed to reverse the overnight score with Jo and Otalie winning the whole event and Isabel and Millie coming a very close third. So it's all to play for up north next week with the final weekend of the selector events.

24 Sept MIRROR SOUTH ZONE AND NATIONAL SQUAD QUALIFICATION - THE FIRST EVENT
11 Itchenor boats are aiming to qualify for RYA national and zone squads this year. It is a fiercely competitive year with 31 applications nationally for 20 spaces. There are two qualifying events for the national squad – Poole and Windermere/Ulswater and two for the South Zone - Poole and Weymouth. Although results at these events are important, selectors will also take account of past sailing records, age and potential. The RYA coaches (National squad - Catherine Putt and South Zone - Nicky MacGregor) are in attendance watching the boats at all these events. It is tremendous that so many Itchenor boats are aiming for the squads and reflects the strength in depth at the club.

At Poole last weekend the ISC boats were greeted with winds of 25 knots with gusts up to 30. Three races were held and whilst there were a number of capsizes, the Itchenor boats fared well. On Sunday the winds subsided a little much to the relief of the lighter crews. Four Itchenor boats finished the regatta in the top ten – Katie Davies and Gemma Keers (5), Clare Peterson and Eleanor Keers (8), Izzy Mcparland and Ellie Barker (9) and Isabel Davies and Mille Moss (10).

This weekend it's off to Weymouth for the second qualification event for the South Zones – good luck to all the ISC boats attending.....we will keep you posted.

  8 sept Dear All

As I am sure most of you now know, but in case you don't, I have taken over as Mirror Class Captain from Jonathan Davies. Yes, quite an act to follow and I am only just getting my head around it all!

Whilst I am busily planning next summer's mirror sailing, there are still plenty of sailing opportunities this Autumn, which I thought it would be helpful to outline:

10/11th September: No Club racing but two local open meetings: on Saturday at Warsash and on Sunday at Hillhead. Details of both are attached. The Davies girls are both taking their boats. Do let Jonathan Davies know if you are thinking of going so that he can let both Clubs know likely numbers. He's happy to field any questions you may have on these events.

17/18th September: Mirror Class Regional Traveller event at Poole*

24/25th September: RYA South Zone Sailing Championships at Weymouth*

*Both these events are key for those sailors who are interested in securing a place in the RYA South Zone squad 2011/2012. Last year, Itchenor was very successful in having 6 boats in the South zone squad and there is no reason why we should not achieve the same again. The South zone training sessions take place during the Winter, most of which are to be based at Itchenor and Hayling. We have a number of boats planning to attend these events and again Jonathan Davies is happy to advise as he will also be going with his girls. You need to apply for the South zone squad – details of the selection process, events and application form can be found at the following: http://www.rya.org.uk/racing/youthjunior/Pages/default.aspx.

2nd October and 9th October: Sunday Club racing – see handbook

22/23rd October: We will be racing at Itchenor for the Bond Prize over Saturday and Sunday and having our end of season dinner and prize giving at the Club on Saturday evening. More details to follow but do put the date in your diaries as our final end of season flourish.

I guess it is now time to focus on getting everyone back to school...
