ISC MIRROR OPEN - SEPTEMBER 24th 2006
Report by Jilli Darling
The Mirror Open at Itchenor attracted 28 competitors for the last event of the Southern Traveller series and was especially interesting as many of the boats sported the new Bermudan rigs which have been legal for the last month.
The race officer Andy FitzGerald scheduled 4 races on a high tide course in Chichester Harbour. Race one had a good breeze of around force 3 and was won by John Clementson who had a clear lead over Edward FitzGerald. As the last boat finished, race two was started with minimal waiting around – good organisation by the race committee! Race two was also won by John but with Liam Arrowsmith from Plymouth close behind in second. The tide was changing for race three as was the winner - Edward FitzGerald won, following a protest, and 12 year old Charlie Hartley scored second. The last race of the day included a drastic tide change and a different winner, Liam Arrowsmith with John Clementson not far behind with second and Edward FitzGerald in third place. After a hard sail in against the incredibly strong tide prize giving took place naming Jillian Darling and Emma Spruce 5th, Helena Newell and Charlotte Fitz 4th, Edward FitzGerald and Chantal Crane 3rd , Liam Arrowsmith and Issy FitzGerald 2nd with the clear winner, from Chipstead, John Clementson and his son Jamie.
Overall it was a really good day with even winds so thanks to everyone who made it possible - it was a great way to end the weekend!
