14 Aug CHARLES HYATT COMPLETES ROUND THE WORLD RACE
Many congratulations to ISC member Charles Hyatt who has completed a Clipper Round the World race.

Charles Hyatt completed his 35,000 mile circumnavigation in July on board "Jamaica Lightning Bolt", one of the ten 68' one-design yachts competing in the Clipper 09-10 race. Made up of 14 individual races, it was an eventful 10 month journey for the various boats, with a dismasting off Taiwan, another dismasting in big seas and 70 knot winds in the Pacific following a knockdown, one boat abandoned after running aground on a submerged coral reef in the Java Sea, a major start-line collision in Cape Town, 2 med-evacs and an MOB in the Southern Ocean.

9 Aug MANY CONGRATULATIONS TO BECKY KALDERON WHO FINISHED IN 4th PLACE IN INTERNATIONAL 420 WORLDS
Rebecca Kalderon sailing with Katrina Brewer (Parkstone) finished 4th overall in the recent 420 world championships held in Haifa in Israel. The GBR team had prepared for light winds, and were taken by surprise by a strong wind qualifying series. Rosie Sibthorp sailed with Tom Gillard (P&B) in the open fleet where these unusual conditions saw them miss the gold fleet and finish 18th in the silver fleet. The sailors saw large turtles, sting rays and loads of jelly fish and enjoyed launching from the sailing clubs private sandy beach into a crystal clear bay. They had to contend with big waves and sometimes sloppy shifty conditions as the wind died later in the week.

COWES WEEK: XOD Catherine wins class and White Group overall

The 1923-built XOD Catherine, sailed by Steve and Peter Lawrence, and Patrick Smart from Itchenor, have not only won the biggest, and one of the most competitive classes at Cowes Week with 88 boats, but have also won White Group overall.

With four firsts, a fifth and a second to their credit, and with some of the most impressive leads recorded this week, the Catherine team are, not surprisingly, incredibly popular winners. As a team, they've been racing together in the XODs at Cowes Week for 10 years and up to now, the overall Captain's Cup national championship title has eluded them.

Stepping ashore this afternoon after their final concluding race, Peter Lawrence commented: "We've come second in the fleet four times, which is why we were a little apprehensive as we headed out to the start line this morning. We are so happy to have won.

"We've had some fantastic sailing with plenty of interesting beats up The Green shoreline, which is great for the XODs."

Next year the class celebrates its Centenary, which will see an even bigger fleet on the start line. According to Lawrence around 120 boats expected.
