Bosham week.Several Itchenor boats, especially 420s, were given entry slots even when some Bosham boats were refused. Itchenor swept the board in 420s, with Will Kalderon and Jilli Darling first in everything, Jack Yeoman and Henry Spreckley were 2rd 420 and George Yeoman and Sarah Burnford 4th 420 in a fleet of 22. Archie Law and William Moss were 3rd senior mirror. At the prize giving Bosham announced that entry will be different next year – Bosham boats may have to qualify by completing at least 3 races at the club; criteria as yet undecided for visiting harbour boats.
420 Nationals at Hayling. 77 boats from 4 counties competed (including USA and Myanmar) and 5 Itchenor boats. The race officer decided that the standard of the fleet was such that sailing would only be allowed in average wind speeds below 17 knots, so 2 days racing were lost, but the younger, lighter and girl boats benefited! Jack Yeoman and Tom Hodgkinson sailed brilliantly to achieve 2 race wins and finish 9th. Rebecca Kalderon and Rosie Sibthorp 14th; and Alice Currey (57th), Jake Woolfenden and Charlie Birkett (66th ) and Meg Pudney and Grace Spreckley(74th) kept going in some difficult conditions. There were parties every night with different themes to keep everyone entertained.
29 Aug SUNBEAM JUNIOR TROPHY RACE
A new trophy has been established to give younger and able Club helms a chance to race a heavier keel boat than they might previously have experienced. The first race for this new Sunbeam trophy was held on Monday 27th August.
Helms from Club Members had to be under 18 years of age at the end of 2006 and there were 6 entrants. It was held in light shifting winds and strong tide which made it a very tactical race with most of the fleet having to kedge at some stage.
In a very close fought finish Sophie Knight eventually got through to win in Melody crewed by her Father and John Ford after a long tacking battle against Jack and Father Roger Yeoman in Romany. All those who sailed enjoyed the experience which hopefully will attract more young dinghy sailors next year

29 Aug ANDY SHAW AND TEAM FINISH RUNNERS UP IN RYA YOUTH MATCH RACING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007
Over the glorious Bank Holiday weekend, youth sailors from across the country travelled to Weymouth to take part in the Volvo RYA Youth Match Racing Championships.
Nine teams battled in the light winds and managed to complete the first seven flights on Saturday afternoon, after teams had been delayed until 1300 waiting for the sea breeze to build.
Teams arrived early on Sunday morning to a constant five knots and were sent on the water for a 0930 start. After completing the first round robin, race organisers started the second round robin, however as the wind died shortly after 1500, and the sea breeze failed to increase, or become consistent, racing was cancelled for the day.
This meant that with only one day left to potentially finish the final 11 flights and the predicted light winds, the second round robin was abandoned. The results from the first round robin took the top six teams led by Shaw, Saxton, Terry, Brearey, Stephens and Hall.
Monday arrived with stronger winds than predicted at 0900, when crews were rigging the J80s.
Teams Shaw and Saxton both won their places in the finals by winning their semi’s 2-0. Shaw lost the first match after being unable to release a riding turn on the jib sheet and was forced to retire from the race. The second match, was hard fought in the pre-start, with Saxton leading off the line and covering Shaw all the way up the beat. Shaw was unable to catch up in the dieing wind, allowing Saxton to gain a 2-0 win.
Event Director, John Burgoine commented, “For many of the sailors this was their first experience of match racing, so we hope that they had a positive experience and leant a lot. I hope to see them all either next year or in some of the upcoming qualifiers.”

About the Volvo RYA Keelboat Programme
The Volvo RYA Keelboat Programme is an exciting initiative set up to provide training, coaching and grants to a small but select number of young talented sailors who in turn will be pivotal to future British keelboat projects. It aims to encourage young sailors and windsurfers, at the grass roots level, to stay in the sport and learn to compete.
14 Aug ITCHENOR XODs TRIUMPH AT COWES

phoenixThe Itchenor XOD team scored notable collective and individual successes at this year’s Skandia Cowes Week.

Most notable was the thirteen boat strong team’s resounding victory in the inter-division competition. Teams from each of the divisions where Xs are raced – Hamble, Lymington, Parkstone, Yarmouth and Itchenor – compete annually for the Phillipson Challenge Shield. It is 35 years since Itchenor last won this trophy.

Of the 70+ fleet of Xs at Cowes one leading competitor remarked: “The racing is always tough, it’s the toughest fleet in the world!”

“Our team’s success reflects the growing competitiveness of XOD racing at Itchenor Sailing Club.” Say Bill Barnes XOD Class Captain. Two boats in the successful team joined the club just this season.

The Itchenor team also boasted the X fleet’s youngest crew with a combined age of just 53 – Andy Shaw, Tom Hodkinson and Ed Moore in Phoenix racing in their first Cowes Week. They scored an excellent 5th place on Monday and were a commendable 13th overall.

Individual boats won a number of trophies, including: Lass sailed by Richard Jordan, Richard Bullock and Jonathan Fletcher won the Royal Thames Challenge Cup on Sunday; Alastair Ashford, Tina Scott and Tom Smith in Relaxation captured the Steele-Pilcher Salver on Wednesday. The Grantham Cup was awarded to Michael Shaw, David Humphrey and Rikke Dakin in Perdix for Thursday’s race.
