30 Jan ITCHENOR SAILING CLUB APPOINTS NEW CLUB SECRETARY
Members may be aware that our Secretary, Martin Buckley, resigned at the end of last year as he had accepted another post locally. Fortunately John Phillips agreed to be Interim Acting Secretary during the winter: he is a keen sailor and until recently was the Bursar at Westbourne House School. John is supervising the staff, the winter events and the maintenance programme with great effectiveness, but is committed to finishing in April when his own sailing starts.

I am pleased to announce that the club has now appointed Stephen Carden-Noad as the new Secretary, as from April 1st. Stephen joins us from the Royal Lymington Yacht Club, where he is Deputy Secretary, a post he has held with distinction for 8 years. He was responsible for the large sailing and training programme at Lymington as well as being involved in both administration and house matters. He started his career in banking, mainly on the property side and left this in 1993 in favour of jointly running a sailing charter business company in the Solent, following which he joined RLYC. He is married with two daughters.

We are all delighted that Stephen will be bringing his abilities and experience to Itchenor, and very much look forward to welcoming him and his wife Chrissie to the club at the start of the sailing season.

Stephen says "I am very much looking forward to meeting and working with the officers, members and staff of Itchenor Sailing Club."

29 Jan 2007 ROLEX MIAMI OLYMPIC CLASSES REGATTA
This regatta has just finished and brought the best of the best together. We are pleased to report that Christina Bassadone and Saskia Clark finished 5th overall in the Women's 470 (click here to link to results) and that John Gimson (getting to know his Tornado) finished 25th in his class (click here to link to results).
24 Jan Did you know… … that the Club is open on Saturday lunchtimes for drinks and bar lunches from a seasonal menu?

It’s open between 12 midday and 2.30pm; the fire will be blazing and the Bar cosy. Jimmy’s Winter Warmer menu features high quality ingredients in tasty daily specials, for example, Ham and Asparagus au Gratin, Lasagne with Garlic Bread, Fish and Chips, Jacket Potatoes with a range of fillings, Baguettes with warm and cold fillings etc. Prices range from £3.95 to £5.50 and all meals are cooked to order.

So what are you waiting for? Tell all your friends!

Sunday lunches are also available, with a choice of roasts and all the trimmings just like you’d make at home – but without all the work!

On Sunday the 4th of February, 70+ people have already booked for lunch in conjunction with the Itchenor Society (which does include lots of Club members as well as other local people). The dining room and jubilee room will therefore be fully subscribed. We are all obviously anxious not to turn away any members who would like to visit the Club during the winter, but on that particular Sunday any 'drop in' lunch customers would have to be catered for in the Committee Room, and might experience some delays

We are encouraging you to use the Club as we all know it offers a special service. The winter opening hours have been requested by Club users, but if no-one is visiting the Club at certain times, the opening hours will be critically reviewed to make sure we provide the best service at times when people really want it.

18 Jan VOLVO RYA CHAMPION CLUB
Last year the Sailing Committee agreed to apply for ISC to become a Volvo RYA Champion Club. The RYA has now assessed the Club and approved the application. This is the letter from RYA Performance Director, Chris Atherton:

"I believe that the sailing club meets all the criteria to become a Volvo RYA Champion Club.

There is little doubt in the eyes of the RYA that the club successfully introduces young sailors into the sport of dinghy sailing, through a well structured and organised training program. The sailors are clearly motivated to go on and race at both club and on to National and International level.

This is highlighted by the successes of some of your sailors that have just attended the 420 and Mirror Worlds.

The success of the club has been due to the active and hardworking volunteers of the membership, who have strived to develop and support the junior and youth sections. However, a number of these volunteers have also gone beyond the confines of the Itchenor Sailing Club to support the class associations and the RYA. Without the support that these people and other similar minded individuals, it is very hard for our junior and youth sailors to reach the levels of success they have.

I could name them but there are a lot and it has been a delight to work with them.

I will put the wheels into motion to complete the Volvo RYA Champion award status.

11 Jan MIRROR PRE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, PORT ELIZABETH, SOUTH AFRICA

4 Jan RESPONSE TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL AGENCY QUESTIONNAIRE ON
THE PAGHAM TO EAST HEAD COSTAL DEFENCE STRATEGY 2007 .

Chichester Harbour Conservancy has assessed the Environment Agency strategy document.
The Conservancy has serious reservations about the basis on which this Strategy is founded.
In particular the Strategy is flawed in the following respects:
  • It has failed to assess what impact widening the harbour entrance, by Managed Realignment, will have on the hydrodynamics of the harbour and consequent sedimentation in the navigable channels.
  •  It has failed to identify and quantify what impact that sedimentation will have on the range of vessels using the harbour.

In other words: “Letting East Head go may result in the harbour silting up

East Head and Chichester Harbour are unique recreational and commercial amenities of enormous value. Club members, who understand the value of East Head and Chichester Harbour, are strongly encouraged to take time to read and respond to the Strategy proposal and the Conservancy response.

The Conservancy and our Harbourmaster, John Davis, ask that if you share their concerns, you should make this known to the Environment Agency. Please complete the questionnaire and return to the EA along the lines outlined in the accompanying letter from the Conservancy. In particular do express your support for the position taken by the Conservancy. If you are a registered user of the harbour you will have received a copy of the 'Initial Consultation' and the questionnaire from the Harbour Conservancy. If you reside outside the area or have not received these papers, we would ask you to spare just a few minutes and visit the link below, download the documents, and complete and return the questionnaire.

“This is an important issue, on which the future of our harbour and our sailing may depend. I hope you will support the Harbour Conservancy in their commitment to save the harbour (and club) for generations to come”.
