11 Mar ISC BECOMES AN RYA CHAMPION CLUB
The club was officially made a Champion Club by the RYA at a ceremony at the Dinghy Show last week, and we received a plaque which will be fixed in a suitable position in the club.  The plaque was presented by Jo Glanfield, Olympic silver medallist and team member of Volvo for life to Itchenor Sailing Club’s representative Sean Taylor who has just taken over as Mirror class captain.

David Derbyshire, Chris Atherton, David Cambell-James and other RYA officials were present,  and Sean and Jeremy Pudney were able to talk to them about the Club. Blackwater Sailing Club in Essex and Frampton Sailing Club in Gloucestershire also received the award.

Jo Glanfield praised all the clubs.  She said “Without clubs like these, young people in this country would not be able to improve their racing skills or even get into sail racing. I think it’s very important to encourage their good work to help produce the next generation of Olympians.”

On receiving the plaque Sean said he believed that the new ideas the coaches will introduce to the club will help everyone involved. “We appreciate the help already given by the RYA to raise the standard of our young sailors and hope that in becoming a Volvo RYA Champion Club, we will be able to carry on helping more kids get into sailing and racing.”

In the morning Sean and Jeremy, who is now UK Mirror Class Chairman, gave a presentation illustrating the Mirror fleet in Itchenor as an example of how successful Mirror fleets could be run. The RYA was very complimentary and full credit must be given to previous class captains particularly Sarah Fitzgerald, Trish Darling and Carolyn Brigg for all their hard work in establishing the foundations and setting the standards of the training.

The presentation which is on powerpoint,  highlights the development of the various training days and  focuses mainly on the balance between the serious side of racing and having fun ie the social side which builds a platform of young members who can then support each other in their sailing  It also highlighted the development of the different types of training days

The RYA was very impressed by the talent in ISC having about ten children in the southern youth squad and having great success in the recent Mirror Worlds
