26 Oct ITCHENOR RS200 SUCCESS
Team Ronnie, Richard Neall & Sara Terry won the final Fat Face RS200 Open of the season at Datchet Water SC. 41 boats competed in the wind restricted event, with only 2 of the scheduled 6 races being completed due to the light winds. Producing their best two results of the season at exactly the right moment, a 2nd and a 3rd, Richard & Sara claimed their first Open victory!

19 Oct HONEY AND DAINTY IN ST TROPEZ
This year Honey joined Dainty for her annual trip to enjoy the great classic yacht regattas of Regates Royals in Cannes and the Voiles de Saint-Tropez.

Cannes was as welcoming and as delightful as always - with the exception of a severe electric storm that filled our boats with hail on the Thursday.hail

The race to Saint-Tropez on the Sunday, run by Yacht Club de France, was very exciting, at over 28 miles the longest race ever for Sunbeams, at an average speed of 7 knots and at the finish there were just two seconds separating Honey and Dainty. The latter won comfortably on age allowance, of course, a precedent that the owner proposes be adopted for ISC racing!

spinnaker It was interesting to see how a Sunbeam could cope with a spinnaker way bigger than the one allowed at home.

Before the Sardinarde barbecue at Saint-Tropez, Dainty held a quayside soiree for nearly 40 friends, including the locals who had helped bring the boats down and act as hosts, Mike and Lesley Hollis, George and Barbara Brooks, Richard and Sarah Pearson, Bill and Pam Dickson, Graham and Anne Colbourne and Sally Nicholson.

sttropezIt was good to entertain Jonathon Money too, who acknowledged his appreciation the next day by kindly dipping below us on the water when he was driving Lulworth. Mariquita, Cin-cin and the West Solent made it harder for the little Sunbeam.

We are in a golden age of classic yacht revival.
19 Oct ISC INTERNATIONAL 420 OPEN
Last Saturday and Sunday saw the ISC 420 Open meeting. The weather forecast was undoubtedly a factor in keeping some visiting boats away from the event as did the Weymouth match racing event in which twenty 420 sailors were competing. Nevertheless it was good to see over a dozen boats over the course of the weekend, including many from ISC.

In the last few years the event has normally experienced strong winds and challenging sailing conditions. While sailing was difficult again this year, this was entirely due to light and shifty winds in combination with spring tides. Alastair Shaw and his race team (Sue Kalderon and Rachel Struckett) did a great job in the circumstances, managing to complete a full race series of 6 races: which seemed an unlikely prospect given how the weather looked at 9:30 on Saturday morning. Alastair juggled the races, with all bar two having a different course: a welcome change for most of the sailors, more used to 420 events comprising 6 identical races. The race conditions meant that there was plenty of switching of positions over each race, and sailors had to keep their whit's about them. As it turned out the weekend was very enjoyable, with some close, competitive racing.

Thanks not only to the race team, but also to Karin McDanell for helping with regstration and to Jean & Jeremy Pudney for their generous hospitality on Saturday evening.

Prizes were awarded as follows:

First: Ben Palmer & Piers Strong (Island Barn)
Second & First ISC boat: William Kalderon & George Cooke (ISC)
Third: Josh Pistol & Pete Lawrence (Parkstone)

First Girl Crew: Amelia Sloper & Lisa McDanell (ISC)
First Sunday Boat: Jenny Lennon & Cat Kimber (Hayling & Burnham)

11 Oct sailabilitySUCCESS FOR ITCHENOR TEAM AT THE RYA SAILABILITY REGATTA
An Itchenor crew drawn from the XOD class and skippered by Ted Roose gained second place in the prestigious Sailability event on Wednesday. Eleven boats enjoyed a series of three races in ideal conditions in the Solent on Sunfast 37s generously donated for the day by Sunsail. The objective of the event is to raise money for RYA Sailability – the charity that aims to ‘make disability plain sailing’.
Racing a bigger boat requires different techniques and teamwork than a XOD. But the team soon got it together and the competitive skills gained in the close X racing at Itchenor came to the fore. The Itchenor team were: Ted Roose, Bill Barnes, Janine Brooks, Flint Elgie, Stu Haill, Guy Partington, Alex and David Priscott. Itchenor club members were also sailing on two other boats. It is hoped that other Itchenor classes will put together teams for next year’s event.

RYA Sailability offers people who think they can’t even get on a boat – let alone sail one, the chance to achieve the self reliance that sailing can bring and feel the exhilaration of being on the water.
10 OCT RS200 INLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007 –GRAFHAM WATER SC
SPECTACULAR FROM ANDY SHAW.

In a light wind one day event (Sunday was cancelled), Andy Shaw in his first RS200 national event hit the water running finishing a very impressive 13th out of 88 boats. He finished on equal points with 10th place and just one point off of 6th! Awesome. Crewed by 2004 National champion and 2000 Inlands champion Lee Sydenham this was a weekend of learning for Andy from one of the countries top dinghy sailors. Job done!
Team Ronnie, Richard Neall & Sara Terry were 27th, improving 26 places on last years event -lets hope the trend continues next year! with a best result of 3rd in race 2…
Unfortunately Harry and Prue were knocked off their stride in race 1 with some race committee starting anomalies, were blacked flagged, given redress but never got out of the blocks, finishing 47th. Patch Fillery and Sarah Skerton were 53rd.
3 Oct fortitudeINT 14 FORTITUDE TROPHY SATURDAY 29 AND SUNDAY 30 SEPTEMBER by Andrew Penman
12 boats turned out for the Fortitude Trophy open meeting sailed from Itchenor sailing club on the weekend of 29th/30th Sept. The trophy is typically sailed for on short windward leeward courses, with 5 races being scheduled for each day. The racing was very well managed by Robin Nott and his team.
Racing on Saturday was started on top of a high tide in Chichester harbour in a light northerly Force 2. With a strong tide pushing the boats upwind, crews were just able to twin wire up the beats, but it was the down wind legs were where all the major gains or losses were to be made.
With an optimised crew weight for the conditions, Andrew and Jamie Penman managed to get well clear of the fleet, winning the first race. Sibling pairings continued to dominate the day with the Pascal brothers wining the second and Katie and George Nuton winning the third races. With the wind completely dying before the fourth race could be got away, racing was abandoned for the day. This left the father and son team of Andy and Tom Partington the over night leaders.
Sunday saw a much fresher Easterly Force 4. With racing being sailed on a more restricted course in the Gallon reach, it proved to be quite testing conditions. Especially with the odd manoeuvre being required to avoid other harbour users.
From the off, the Partingtons showed the fleet how it should be done, winning the first race comfortably. Douglas Pattison and Damian Ash also showed good speed winning race 2, but too many capsizes spoiled their other results. The Pascal brothers continued to perform consistently and with both Martin Jones and Barry Edginton winning races, results were quite mixed. But with the Partingtons remaining consistently at the front of the fleet, they ended up dominating the event, winning with two races to spare.

Final results:
1) 1503 Andy and Tom Partington 12
2) 1496 Robin and Martin Pascal 19
3) 1500 Douglas Pattison and Damian Ash 20

1 Oct ISC YOUTH SAILING UPDATE by Sue Kalderon
Edwina Glennie Is Commodore of Cambridge University Sailing club this year, running team racing, windsurfing and yacht racing.
George Yeoman, with Georgie Akin-Smith, was first junior (and first Itchenor boat) at the RS200 nationals in Tenby. A brilliant result in some windy conditions.
Various Itchenor youth sailors have been selected to receive RYA training this Winter. In 420s, Rebecca Kalderon and Rosie Sibthorp are in youth squad with Jack Yeoman and Henry Spreckley alongside. In 29ers Ed Fitzgerald is sailing with James Peters (HISC) in the youth squad; they were second at their first national 29er event last weekend and are off to compete at Lake Garda next weekend.
In Mirrors Itchenor has fairly dominated the National junior squad again, taking 4 of the 9 slots. Well done to Charlotte Fitzgerald and Tara Bottomley; Izzy Fitzgerald and Lisa McDanell; Emma Spruce and Lucy Ford; Hugo Sloper and Aiden McCarthy. George and Henry Spreckley will be sailing in the mirror youth squad as well.
