ITCHENOR GIRL TEAM WINS ST WILFRID'S HOSPICE COASTAL CHALLENGE AND BEATS ALL TIME RECORD FOR FUND RAISING

On Saturday 22nd September, 32 yachts competed in the race to the Nab Tower in aid of St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

Despite a postponement due to a complete lack of wind the race eventually started as a force 2 came in from the South giving an almost perfect beat to the Nab Tower.

Trudi, a Hunter Impala 28, skippered by Lisa McDanell with her team of Rosie Sibthorp, Charlotte and Izzy FitzGerald and were the clear winners of both their class as well as overall. As well as sailing well they also raised over £4,000 in sponsorship beating the previous record by £1,000. Trudi’s total points (being the points scored in the race multiplied by the amount raised) were 39,750 some 22,000 points more than the second boat. This also helped take ISC into 2nd place on the team prize. (click here to see the results)

This is a fun event for a good cause and it would be great to see more ISC boats out there next time so we can perhaps challenge the Inn-Shore Cruising Club for the team prize which they have won since the event started.

"Wotan" returns
After slipping the lines on the 2nd July 2005 Ant Fawcett sailed his boat Wotan back to Itchenor on Thursday 9th September 2007. During that period Wotan logged some 10,000 miles. Several club members and friends were invited to join Ant and Bim on their nautical adventure.

10 sep B C J (Bridget) Bowerbank - A very special person

Bridget Bowerbank now 93 and retired from active participation in club affairs has kindly sent the club some items originally specified in her Will, but which she would like the club to have now. These are an oil painting by W Wild, a framed chart of the harbour and a model of an XOD. The Commodore has made a gracious acknowledgement and the gifts will, in due course, be displayed in the club.

She has asked that the model might be presented annually to the XOD making the greatest number of starts in the season. This request is interesting, as the XOD in which she crewed would have won such a trophy on 11 occasions and come second on 10 other years.

During the war Bridget served in the Wrens and worked on small supply craft out of Portsmouth Harbour. She was rated as a Stoker (it couldn’t happen today!) and rose to the rank of Petty Officer. She later became a schoolteacher and was an assistant headmistress when she retired.

For some time whilst she was living in Portsmouth she owned and raced a Victory O D. Later in 1970 Bridget joined ISC and for a few years crewed for Betty Moore in Sunbeam ‘Why’ and won the Ladies race in Sunbeams on two occasions. She crewed for Desmond Bell in various X’s for the next 27 years that included 12 Cowes Weeks and sailing to Poole on 9 occasions to race in Poole Week. Overall in X’s she took part in over 1300 races. Couldn’t we all do with a crew like that!

For many years Bridget acted very energetically as honorary gardener and the ISC front lawn beds were a joy to behold. When eventually she relinquished those voluntary duties the club offered her honorary life membership in recognition of her valuable contribution.

So, thank you Bridget for your gifts and your long years of dedication to club activities.
