Report of Belgium Plate - Bank Holiday Weekend Swallow Racing – 29/30 April/1 May 2006 (thank you Skua)

With a number of boats sailing for the first time this year, Saturday saw sixteen boats boats come to the start line. With a force 2/3 southerly a course was set with 3 beats up to Star. First away was James Birkitt in Kansu until he came to rest on the mud. Tony Glover in Darter took up the running and sailed a good race to lead to the finish. Carolyn Brigg in Marengo and Charles Fisher in Migrant started in mid fleet and worked their way through the fleet to finish in second and third respectively. Harry Roome in Skua came from the back at the first mark to finish fourth.

The afternoon saw a steady force 3 dropping to 2 at the end. Ollie Gilchrist in Bluff led after a short beat to Astra and then let Skua past on a run to Dunes. Despite the fleet splitting on a course up to Channel the order was maintained at the front, with Marengo and Migrant coming through to third and fourth. The final beat against a strong ebb tide saw Marengo slip past to win from Skua, with Bluff losing the wind in mid tide to drop down the fleet for Migrant to finish third.

Sunday morning had the fleet out and ready for a start that never came with all wind dying away. The afternoon fleet was down to twelve with a few believing the wind would never come. A force 2 filled in from the SW and the fleet beat up to Stanbury. Chris Creek led for most of the race, finally finishing third to find that he was PMS. Marengo was last on the way to the first mark but worked her way through the fleet to win again, overtaking Simon Slater in Curlew on the final run. Migrant finished third. With two firsts and a second Marengo captured the Belgium Plate with a race to spare, but minor places were still up for grabs and so Monday’s spare race was called into play.

Monday produced a good force 4. Skua showed early speed and led the fleet to Dunes. On the return run to Rockwood Guy Knight in Spectre took the right hand course in the tide and gained a good lead on the fleet which she held to the finish. A tight four way race developed between Skua, Migrant, now helmed by Richard Thompson, Darter and Chris Creak in Blue Phantom. After the second rounding of Dunes Migrant broke clear and the order at the finish behind her was Darter, Blue Phantom and Skua.

Congratulations to Marengo on her win – one which a few other teams are looking to avenge in the next few weeks!
