Guess what – Marengo wins!
They didn’t even have to sail the last of the four races but because they (Carolyn, Ginny Fox and David Sloper) enjoy their sailing so much, Marengo went out anyway and were rewarded with yet another win in the best breeze of the weekend to secure a perfect 3 points.Others had their moments. Harrier (John Tagg) was first to the windward mark in R1, Archon (Malcolm) lead for the first part of R2 and again in R4 (James this time), Migrant (Charles) all the way in R3 (sailing brilliantly, but OCS), and Penelephon in R4 (NB!). Staying there is important and Marengo never relinquishes their grip on first place once they have worked their way to the front. It was a lightish wind weekend (cf. forecast F3/4). PRO’s Richard Grant and Ian Macdonald Smith had their work cut out to match available water and a light northerly wind on Saturday and an uncertain and backing Westerly on Sunday. The breeze almost died on Saturday afternoon and it turned out to be one of the longest-lasting races of the year. There was a rash of OCS boats over the weekend, particularly in R3 when half the fleet were over. The first two to finish that race - Migrant and Skua (driven with verve by George Miller with Lavinia and Mark Chilton) - were greeted in stony silence.Overlaps:-
- Good to see new faces - (young) James Wallace crewing Archon for the weekend and also Katie Nott in Migrant on Sunday – both helping their respective helms to the front of the fleet
- Penelophon has had a post launch re-fit (!) as most of the fittings had popped off the first time out. As well as getting them sorted, the winches have now gone. The Batt ‘stealth’ black spi has also gone now – somewhat spectacularly. A curious lack of reaching speed is the next item for analysis and action – but that sharp bow is already right up there
- A very friendly Dinner on Saturday night – the concerted effort to get Carolyn ‘neutralised’ had the desired effect on Sunday morning (OCS – but returned)
