Ice Breaker Mirror Coached Racing Series

This week saw a wonderful finale to the Ice Breaker Mirror Coached Racing Series. 18 Boats on both Good Friday and Easter Saturday adding up to a total of 50 young sailors competing over the first 4 weeks of the season in 24 different Mirror Dinghies…..similar numbers of boys and girls and a median age that could not have been far off 10 years old. Many of these sailors experiencing racing for the first time. This reminded all of the strength of the largest class at ISC and the future of youth sailing at Itchenor. The series was won by a very consistent Lucinda Leaver in variable conditions of wind strength, tide and air temperature. The young ladies dominated the fleet with Poppy Benson hot on her tail and on the final day Lucy Fox dominating the last 3 races.
The Everett brothers showed real potential and will surely challenge the early season leaders. One to watch for the future is George Bayliss, winner of Fridays first race in one of his first outings in Gone with the Wind. The video available on the website shows just how close the finishing was in the 18 boat fleet on Good Friday.
The final race was competed for in champagne conditions, glorious spring sunshine, high water, 15 knots of easterly breeze and was even worthy of a fly past from the commodore in his 14. Most importantly lots of young sailors having fun and gaining experience. Thanks to all who assisted with rescue cover (the water was cold for the swimmers). A great start to the season, long may it continue.
