08 January 2021: Latest Coronavirus Update from The Commodore
Published 16:25 on 18 Feb 2021
Happy New Year to you all for 2021. Unfortunately, not a great start with the latest news on Covid.
With this latest surge we are all beginning to know people who have died, illustrating the seriousness of this situation. The Government advice is that sports clubs should shut and the more detailed advice is evolving as per previous events. Govt website link https://www.gov.uk/guidance/national-lockdown-stay-at-home?priority-taxon=774cee22-d896-44c1-a611-e3109cce8eae . Our position continues to be that we should do all we can to avoid encouraging social gatherings as per this guidance and note a lot of what was guidance is now the law.
Therefore in line with government guidelines, the Club is currently closed to members and visitors and staff are working from home where they can. The office will continue to respond to emails in the usual way. However with minimal personnel on site there will be a limited telephone service, so do please email rather than call unless you need to speak to someone urgently.
The Harbour Master (HM) states: Recreational boating is contrary to Government guidance and has the potential to place extra strain on emergency services. The HM has further clarified that local boating is allowed as exercise in his view subject to the normal Covid protocols and the Harbour is open.
The new RYA advice is summarised in their Q&A https://www.rya.org.uk/SiteCollectionDocuments/clubs/Covid%20FAQs%20in%20England%20from%205%20Jan%202021.pdf
Therefore we are discouraging you to go on the water, despite the fact you can launch from the public hard, but the staging will be open to have access to your boat. The changing rooms are closed except for access to the loos.
We have also decided regrettably to stop the Friday take-away food offer on financial grounds as much as for Covid safety reasons. We will keep this under review as the levels of infection reverse.
It would seem this situation will remain the case for the foreseeable future and we are likely to be subject to ongoing restrictions that may affect the beginning of the season and how we operate for another year. Your flag officers will keep these guidelines under regular review as the situation and government guidelines change.
Let us hope things only get better from here and I wish you all a safe Covid free winter.
