Every fortnight, starting Monday 17th March 1700-1830 we have been running a rules session by Zoom. Each session is presented and led by a different member of our fleet and is based on going through a pre-specified section of Bryan Willis's excellent book (£12.35 on Amazon), say 10-15 minutes presentation then discussion within the group. Pre-reading of the relevant section of Bryan Willis's book was advised. We will refine all aspects of the format and frequency of these sessions as they evolve. The idea would be for the sessions to continue well into the sailing season which would also potentially enable actual real-life raceday situations to be discussed and learnt from. There is no perfect time to choose for these sessions and this did seem to work for a good number of people perhaps as people often work from home on Mondays and may have been able to work diaries accordingly. We did run a poll to see whether a later time would work but the majority favoured no change. We circulate materials and a recording after each talk which are also available to view here.
Bryan's book is available at https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rules-Practice-2025-2028-Sailing-Racecourse/dp/1912621738. For those that have the Bryan Willis book, here is a self-explanatory link to the change pages necessitated by the post-publication changes made to RRS2025-28. As they note, only a few are relevant to us https://fernhurstbooks.com/_userfiles/pages/files/rip_full_rule_changes.pdf
We propose not to do a session on RRS21-24 vs RRS25-28 as we think there are much more valuable rules things to focus on. If anyone would like to know more about the changes, please message me (Charles Hyatt) and I will send you John Doerrs slides, which explain them in some detail.
The rules forum is valuable for crews as well as helms - as John Doerr pointed out, a crew with good rules knowledge can be pivotal.
Our aim is to make sure the amount we cover is sufficiently manageable so that we all finish the session rock solid in our understanding and knowledge of it.
