Swallow Training Day
Published 08:56 on 15 Apr 2025
Last Saturday brought 12 Swallows and about 40 people together for a training day led by former national, European and team racing champion and current Team GB Olympic strategist Mark Rushall.
There we were all togged up (as bidden) to go sailing but we had a sauna experience inside on a warm morning in the Members Room whilst digesting Mark's masterful introduction - with supporting acts from Chairman James (how the floppy mast works - a surprise for some), insightful observations from Harry and Fitz, and subliminal go-fast thoughts from Carolyn.
Then out into the building HW spring tide, shared with some other Itchenor keelboats and a large Bosham fast handicap fleet. Mark and Kirsty on Noah's Ark despatched the seemingly well-qualified 12 boat fleet off as 2 boat pairs on a tight W/L course for close examination, inspection - and advice. Boats were vying against each other to optimise their slot, adjust their jib halyard tension (up wind and down), and mainsail set and improve their mark rounding techniques. With Mark in very close attendance it was both helpful and informative!
A welcome break for a quick lunch ashore was called (after all this is Itchenor) and then back out for some fleet racing - (was it 2 or 3?!) races - the normal front runners showed that they had indeed been listening intently - but it wasn't about winning, more just (on this occasion) taking part and learning.
Perfect for shedding some early-season rustiness.
Thank you to all who assisted prior to and on the day - and especially to Mark who also gave us a candid de-briefing to end the day over tea.
